EL ORIGEN. Cosmogonías Americanas. Una revisión de personajes mitológicos y figuras arquetípicas de pueblos originarios del continente

We are delighted to invite you to the art talk EL ORIGEN. Cosmogonías Americanas. Una revisión de personajes mitológicos y figuras arquetípicas de pueblos originarios del continente, led by renowned artist Antonio Briceño.

On this occasion, the artist reminds us that hundreds of indigenous cultures with diverse degrees of social and cultural complexity still exist on the American continent. The author has made the mythical and spiritual universe of these peoples the object of his study for decades. El Origen is a photographic series that offers an iconographic proposal to illustrate this intangible world of our original peoples before it is too late: archetypes, deities, mythological figures, concepts, emotions, and situations that, in general, belong to the mystical, spiritual, psychic, emotional, and symbolic realm.

About Antonio Briceño: Antonio Briceño (Caracas, 1966) holds a degree in Biology (Universidad Central de Venezuela, 1993) and a Master's Degree in Digital Arts (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain, 2015). He lives and works between Caracas and Barcelona. Since 1987, his work has been exhibited internationally, both individually and collectively, on more than one hundred occasions. Over the last 38 years, he has worked with more than 40 indigenous peoples worldwide.

He represented Venezuela at the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007). His awards include the Luis Felipe Toro Prize (Museum of Fine Arts of Caracas, 1997); the Green Leaf Award for Artistic Excellence (2008), granted by the Natural World Museum and the UN; and the AICA Prize (2011) as an Established Artist, for his sustained career and contributions in using photography as a medium to communicate a poetics that advocates for respect for the planet, its inhabitants, and its cultures.

FLASH TALKS: Miami Schmatta

META Miami and Flash Talks cordially invite you to join us for

FLASH TALKS: Miami Schmatta

A special screening of the 50-minute documentary Miami Schmatta, by directors Aaron Glickman and Clare Vickery.

The documentary explores the rich history of Miami's garment industry and the pivotal role that immigrants played in its rise and eventual decline. The film highlights the industry's golden age after World War II and its subsequent struggles, while celebrating the stories of resilience, hope, and hard work from the people who built it.

This history is powerfully embodied by the Dorissa of Miami building, now the home of our foundation, META Miami. The building once served as the central hub for Dorissa, a successful children's dress company founded in the 1960s that grew with the talent of Cuban seamstresses. The two-story factory became a landmark and a symbol of a business built on immigrant ingenuity and dedication. Today, the iconic "Dorissa" name remains on its facade as a lasting tribute to the city's fashion and immigrant legacy.

Directors Aaron Glickman and Clare Vickery will be in attendance for an introduction and post-screening Q&A.

About Clare Vickery: Clare Vickery established a series of businesses in South Florida since 1997 including a commercial art gallery and a cultural non-profit organization that focuses on art exhibitions, original film, theater productions and urban design installations.

About Aaron Glickman: Aaron Glickman is a trained theatrical actor and filmmaker focused on Miami history, politics and culture, and he has established several media platforms including Current Miami and Social Miami.

About Flash Talks: Flash Talks is a curated event series that invites creative individuals to share what truly lies behind their work — their inspiration, creative process, and the personal or professional journey that shapes their craft.

Our goal is for the audience to experience more than just a compelling presentation; we want them to walk away with new insights, fresh ideas, and a deeper emotional and intellectual connection to each speaker’s artistic and human story. Whether it’s through visuals, storytelling, or live demonstrations, Flash Talks celebrates creativity in all its forms by shining a light on the “why” behind the work.

LandEscapes.

The Landscape as the Redemption of Humanity

The landscape is more than an environment: it is a living memory and a horizon of the future. In times of ecological crisis, contemplating and representing it become acts of resistance and hope.

Across the American continent, the landscape manifests itself as a vital force—both a memory of what we have transformed and a promise of what can be regenerated. Within this context, art emerges as a bridge between the human and the natural, reminding us of the urgency of rethinking our relationship with the earth.

The artists gathered in this exhibition —Adrián Pujol, Antonio Ugarte, Christian Vinck, Mariana Bunimov, Edouard Duval-Carrié, Víctor Julio González, José Gamarra, and Sigfredo Chacón— invite us to view the American space as an organism in transformation: fragile, wounded, yet capable of renewal.

In each proposal, the landscape is not a static representation but a living organism that confronts the viewer. It becomes a stage for urgent questions: How do we care for what still exists? How do we repair what has been damaged? How do we recognize ourselves once more as part of a larger whole?

This exhibition invites us to explore different perspectives of the American landscape, where nature emerges as a source of ecological redemption. Here, humanity and the natural world are bound by a shared destiny: to survive, to heal, and to transform our relationship with the planet.

MERCEDES ELENA GONZÁLEZ and VALERIE BRATHWAITE | Feminine Ecology

Henrique Faria New York and META Miami present Feminine Ecology, a compelling dialogue between Venezuelan artist Mercedes Elena González and Trinidadian artist Valerie Brathwaite, centered on female sexuality and nature.

From 1976 to 1985, Mercedes Elena González (Caracas, 1952) created her first significant body of drawings, which delve into the experience of womanhood. These works feature intricate circles and shapes that evoke body parts,—fleshy landscapes, spirals, and seashells—symbolic representations of the female reproductive cycle, linking the female body to the natural world.

Valerie Brathwaite ((Trinidad and Tobago, 1940), with a career spanning over 50 years, draws her primary inspiration from nature. As a sculptor, she focuses on organic abstraction, crafting forms with simple sculptural volumes and sinuous lines that echo the flora, fauna, and landscapes of the Caribbean and South America.

Feminine Ecology celebrates nature and fertility, offering a radical and poetic exploration of the female body as a dynamic yet complex ecology, deeply rooted in growth, development and, ultimately, regeneration.
